Abhik Patwa was the 'Overseas' in 2010. A student at Leicester University, he came to the club having played International cricket for.....Tanzania. It was therefore uncertain just how good he was, and how would he shape up to playing in the Everards League in English conditions, very different from Tanzania.
He was billed as a top order batsman who could bowl off spin. Sadly the off spin never really came up to expectations, but he played some useful innings at the top of the order, and he fielded well, possessing a particularly safe pair of hands.
Towards the end of the season we welcomed the Tanzania national team, en route for a ICC tournament to Bassett Avenue. Abhik skippered Countesthorpe, and a tense game ensued, with the Tanzanians ultimately winning. A memorable Sunday, with Barry Hibberd, the sole scorer, coping with the unfamiliar Tanzanian names as well as normal duties, and Umpires Chris Pople and Andrew Bourne dealing with the nuances of fielding circles, white balls, and Countesthorpe resplendent in green kit.
Abhik has now played over 50 games for Tanzania, playing in various ICC Tournaments, and continues to score steadily. In 2012, he topped the tournament batting averages in the 2012 African T20 competition, with 80s against Botswana and Ghana.
